The United States Golf Association (USGA) announced on the 5th (Korean time) that as a result of the application deadline for the US Women’s Open, 2,107 people applied for participation.
It far surpassed last year’s record of 1,874 applicants, the highest ever.
This year’s US Women’s Open, which opens on July 6 at Pebble Beach Golf Links, California, USA, can qualify for participation through a 36-hole preliminary round in addition to players who have qualified according to the prescribed qualifications.
The preliminary round will be held at 23 venues from the 10th to the 8th of the following month.
Qualifiers will be held in 17 US states and three golf courses outside the US, including Canada, Japan and Belgium.
Anyone who is a professional player or an amateur with a handicap of 2.4 or less can apply, but there are so many applicants that this ticket is considered to be a ‘star in the sky’.
This year’s qualifier features two former champions: Christie Kerr and Paula Creamer (both from the USA).
Kerr, the 2007 champion, and Creamer, the 2010 champion, challenged the qualifiers when the 10-year qualification for the US Women’s Open winner had expired and they could not qualify for another route.
