“It’s embarrassing that I couldn’t fill the regular innings” Reflection of 13.2 billion aces, greed for 2 rabbits in ‘Team + Season’

NC Dinos Koo Chang-mo (26) showed his greed for the first regular innings in his debut.

In an interview with the spring camp held on the 9th (Korean time) at the Reed Park baseball field in Arizona, USA, Chang-mo Koo said, “He is in good shape. The condition is so good right now. I have a strong desire to get into practice as soon as possible. Since he was in Jeju Island, he has pitched in the bullpen and has thrown the ball five times now.”

Koo Chang-mo, who reached full potential in 2019, has grown into a left-handed ace representing Korea. However, his injuries have taken hold and he has had a rough time over the past three years. In 2020, he only started 15 games, and in 2021, he did not start a game at all.

However, Koo 안전놀이터Chang-mo, who returned from injury last year, was still in good shape. He had a successful return season, going 11-5 with a 2.10 earned run average in 19 games (111⅔ innings). NC gave Gu Chang-mo, who returned to health, a contract extension of up to 13.2 billion won for 6+1 years.

Koo Chang-mo, who became NC’s franchise ace, said about his extension contract, “It is true that there is a sense of burden and more responsibility. I also have to prove it now. This year, I want to make a season where all concerns are washed away and proven.”

This year is an important season for Koo Chang-mo. This is because it is the first season of his extended contract and international competitions are waiting in succession. Starting with the World Baseball Classic (WBC) to be held in March, the Hangzhou Asian Games in September and the Asian Professional Baseball Championship (APBC) in November will be held. Koo Chang-mo, who has been selected for the WBC team, is highly likely to represent the national team in all other competitions.

Gu Chang-mo, who made up his mind before the WBC, saying, “I have to do my best no matter what game I play,” said, “At this time, it’s time to get into bullpen pitching and raise my body. However, since we are now preparing for the actual battle, there will be some difficult parts in the middle of the season. But he thinks he has to overcome. I think I need to pay more attention to physical strength management than the technical part,” he explained the preparation process.

The biggest concern is, of course, injuries. While coach Kang In-kwon welcomes Koo Chang-mo to the national team, he is contemplating how to manage him physically. He said, “Ko Chang-mo should throw more than 140 innings this year. Since he has a physical burden due to international competitions, he is contemplating whether to give him a break in 70 or 80 innings or to give him a rest after filling in 140 innings. In the starting rotation, I plan to appoint him as the second starter and postpone the mound as much as possible after a 4-day break.”

Koo Chang-mo also said, “Concerns about his health are being recognized. He entered the off-season a little faster than usual, and he prepared hard because it was a part where he could get hurt if he rushed. I’m not the only one who goes out a lot, everyone is doing it under the same conditions, so I’m preparing while taking care of my body.”

However, as a starting pitcher, I have a strong desire to play many innings. Koo Chang-mo said, “Of course I want to fill the regular innings. After completing the regular innings, I think I need to be greedy for other parts. As a starting pitcher, it is embarrassing that there is no regular innings yet. I really want to fill it this year,” revealing his greed for innings.
